ROCKPORT TECHNOLOGIES ORION NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT
The Sound Environment Omaha will be the first showroom in the USA to have the new Rockport Orion.
Orion has been in development for three years and is an entirely new design based on what has been learned in creating previous designs. All three drivers are newly designed to work seamlessly together employing Rockport’s latest thinking. The enclosure is a new implementation of the criterion used in the Lyra – Rockport’s top-of-the-line speaker.
All Rockport speakers are three-way designs utilizing as many as five drivers. The Rockport design criterion means that all of the models have the same sonic signature and musical accuracy. They just get better as the investment in enclosure and drivers permits better performance. The Orion are $133,000 a pair. As is always the case, we will take Cygnus, Avior, or Atria in trade on the Orion as well as non-Rockport speakers.
The Orion uses three newly designed speaker drivers in a unique enclosure that permits extraordinary performance while keeping the enclosure as small as possible. The Orion is only 50″ tall and 14″ wide although each speaker does weigh 360 pounds.
Over the years we have become very familiar with the exceptional care that the people at Rockport take in achieving the final result of every speaker they make. Each crossover is individually adjusted to ensure that every pair of speakers matches the reference frequency response curve to within .25db. Finally, every speaker is listened to with music to make sure that the final result meets Rockport’s standards.
The Orion will be presented by Josh Clark and Jon Zimmer in our Omaha Showroom on Thursday, November 17. Josh is the CEO and owner of Rockport Technologies and shares the design work with Andy Payor, the company’s founder. Seating is limited. We will present the Orion with a very high-performance system utilizing a pair of Gryphon Mephisto mono amplifiers, the new Gryphon Commander preamplifier, dCS Vivaldi digital to analog converter, Transparent power conditioning, and Opus and Magnum Opus cable. The music reproduction you will hear is extraordinary – very realistic and musically accurate.

In keeping with Rockport’s understated, yet timeless style, the ORION strikes an impeccable balance of elegance and raw performance. The ORION is available for pre-order today and is shipping this summer with a retail price of $133,000.
The entire enclosure for the ORION is comprised of just three components; the inner cast aluminum housing, the outer carbon fiber main housing, and the outer carbon fiber baffle shell. The fabrication process completely eliminates the design constraints imposed by conventional construction methods, and owing to this design freedom, the ORION’s form has been fully optimized for ideal drive unit placement, reduction of internal standing waves, and minimum edge diffraction, ensuring an unhindered, coherent wave launch.

Essential to the success of the ORION are three newly developed drive units; the new, custom, carbon fiber sandwich cone 13-inch woofer, capable of delivering authoritative, first-octave response with staggering headroom and grip, an all-new 7-inch carbon fiber sandwich composite midrange with densely saturated tonal colors and unmatched transparency, and a 1.25-inch waveguide mounted beryllium tweeter with virtually perfect pistonic behavior, resulting in ultra-low distortion and extraordinarily transparent, extended, and dynamically realistic high frequencies.
